WowzaBox, an innovative culinary brand, is changing the way people in the UK experience authentic Chinese cuisine by prioritising local sourcing from respected North East suppliers. Since its inception, the company has delivered nearly 200,000 meals across the country, all while remaining committed to supporting regional businesses.
Founded by Newcastle University graduate Joshy Jin, WowzaBox emerged during the pandemic to cater to a growing demand for high-quality, restaurant-style food at home. Operating from its base in Team Valley, the company provides a chef-led recipe box service that features a unique menu of fresh, region-specific Chinese dishes, many of which are rarely available in the UK.
WowzaBox partners with several prominent North East suppliers to ensure the highest quality ingredients. This includes Gateshead-based JR Holland, which provides fresh vegetables, and Newcastle’s Warren Butterworth, which supplies premium meats. Additionally, the company sources sustainable seafood from MSC-approved Taylor Foods in North Shields and Phil’s Plaice.
Joshy Jin, who first gained recognition in the North East culinary scene with the launch of La Yuan in 2017—the region’s first Sichuan-focused restaurant—explained his dedication to local suppliers. “We remain committed to our roots in the North East as we continue to grow, and the region has supported me throughout my journey,” he said. “From attending Newcastle University to launching La Yuan and subsequently WowzaBox, I am proud to support our local suppliers while offering customers the chance to experience authentic Chinese cuisine made with the freshest quality ingredients.”
Darren Leason, Director at Taylor Foods, highlighted the longstanding relationship with Joshy Jin, noting that they have been supplying him with fresh seafood for almost a decade. “It’s been incredible to watch his journey from running a restaurant to transforming the way people experience Chinese cuisine at home,” he commented. “We’re proud to be part of that journey, ensuring that WowzaBox customers enjoy the same high-quality, sustainable, and freshly sourced seafood that has made Joshy’s dishes stand out.”
With a significant crowdfunding investment through Seedrs, WowzaBox is now poised for expansion. The company plans to increase production and secure new premises, allowing it to meet the growing demand for its culinary offerings. This development comes at a time when many consumers are looking for more authentic dining experiences that can be enjoyed in the comfort of their homes.
WowzaBox’s commitment to quality and local sourcing not only benefits customers but also contributes positively to the North East’s economy. By collaborating with local businesses, WowzaBox supports the region’s agricultural and food sectors while ensuring that diners receive the freshest ingredients possible.
As WowzaBox continues to grow, it promises to bring the flavours of authentic Chinese cuisine to more households across the UK, reaffirming its mission to redefine how people savour this beloved cuisine. The company’s success story serves as a testament to the potential of local partnerships and the impact of innovative thinking in the food industry.
