The future of K-Pop band NewJeans is uncertain after public complaints against their record label.
The hit-making band issued an ultimatum to reinstate their producer, which was rejected.
NewJeans debuted in 2022, becoming a sensation with a 90s club sound reminiscent of TLC, SWV, and En Vogue. Two weeks ago, they hosted a surprise livestream on YouTube, expressing dissatisfaction with their label Hybe and protesting the removal of their producer, Min Hee-jin.
The group is bound by a seven-year contract ending in 2029 but seems unwilling to continue under current conditions. Terminating the contract could cost around £170 million, a significant amount even in the competitive world of K-Pop.
The problems reportedly began when Hybe started auditing ADOR and Min Hee-jin in April. This included searching computers at ADOR’s Seoul offices. Hybe accused Min of corporate espionage, which she denied, countering that Hybe was retaliating due to her complaints against another label act, ILLIT.
Hyein expressed frustration at being unable to resolve issues internally. Danielle apologised to fans for the turmoil. Despite the conflict, the band continued with their promotions, including a new campaign with Calvin Klein.
Hanni accused another girl group’s manager of instructing members to ignore her. The band set a 25 September deadline for Min’s reinstatement, hoping to avoid further conflict.
The board emphasised that Min’s role and authority as a producer were secure, and future discussions would finalise the terms.
Korean media speculate that NewJeans might seek legal grounds for contract violations or pay a substantial penalty to terminate their deal.
The future of NewJeans remains uncertain as they contemplate their next steps.
Fans and observers keenly await the band’s decision, which will shape the destiny of the K-Pop stars.
