Hollywood actor Damian Lewis took part in a quirky tradition, herding sheep over the River Thames.
The star joined more than 1,000 Freemen, participating in a centuries-old event by leading the sheep.

Lewis wore his grandfather’s wool coat and carried a crook, paying homage to his family’s history. His grandfather’s coat dates back to World War One, making the event even more special for the actor. The Worshipful Company of Woolmen, one of the oldest livery companies in the city, invited Lewis to participate.
Historically, Freemen could bring livestock and tools into the City without paying tax. Lewis was seen guiding the sheep and keeping them in check, dressed in traditional attire. The event highlighted the Freeman’s rights to drive sheep toll-free, showcasing a significant part of London’s history.
The sheep drive is part of celebrations that began in 2013. This tradition marks the medieval right to bring produce to market over the Thames without paying tolls.
While the event is usually held on London Bridge, it sometimes takes place on Southwark Bridge due to traffic considerations.

Master Woolman Manny Cohen noted that the tradition was resurrected about 15 years ago, evolving into a major celebration.
The sheep drive is not just a celebration but also a fundraiser. The event features numerous stalls and aims to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the Woolmen Charity and the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
